ECONOMIC SITUATION AND PROSPECTS:

Since the early 1990s, Algeria has adopted a market-based policy of economic liberalization. It exerts great efforts to adapt its economy to the world market, especially with the imminent enforcement of the association agreement with Europe.

The energy sector remains the main source of hard currency for Algeria.

The last few years witnessed a liberalization of the energy sector in Algeria where many foreign companies, particularly American, British and French, have been allowed to invest in this sector.

Currently, Algeria holds negotiations in order to join the World Trade Organization.

The economic reform program in Algeria faces a growing opposition from trade unions and certain political parties, especially as regards the privatization of public enterprises. The past year witnessed social troubles that affected a number of economic sectors.
